The previous owner said that the starter would not stay engaged, it kicked out early making it hard to start sometimes. I found that the bendix shaft needed to be cleaned and lubed. I have however noticed on the wind down when I let the key go, it sounds like a dry bushing. Maybe I need to remove the starter and lube the ends of the armature?? If that is the deal, maybe he wasn't getting a full spin due to a dry bushing???

Ever have one of these apart on a '77 Merc 500 Thunderbolt 4 cylinder?

Your thoughts?
