Fuel Economy Evinrude 115 1984

I have a very light aluminum boat with a 115 Evinrude 1984. My concern is fuel economy. I'm running through 20 gallons of fuel very quickly. (about 40 miles cruising @ 4000-4200 rpm) seems really thirsty to me. I fish on really big water (St. Lawrence River) but I'm afraid to go too far ..

any guidlines on what I should expect from this motor? I've only owned it for a few weeks.
