Need a new prop

The wife hit something this weekend and ruined the 14.25?x23P 3 blade AL prop that camera with our boat when we bought it 3 years ago (actually it is standard issue on my boat from the factory). So, now I can spend some $$ on a new prop that fits our needs without getting questioned by the boss.

Boat Info:
Boat: 1998 FW Horizon QX
Hull: Deep-V, 16.5ft length, 7.5ft beam, 18 Deg deadrise
Engine: 4.3L GL with 190HP
Drive: VP SX outdrive with 1.79:1 gear ratio
Weight: ~2,800lbs with typical load

Damaged Prop info
Type: 14.25?x23P 3 blade AL (VP model number 3850303)
WOT RPM: ~4800RPM
Speed at WOT: ~49mph

I did not have my spare prop with me at the lake, and borrowed a buddies extra prop (15x19P, 3 blade AL) for the weekend. I loved the hole shot and low plane speed (~10mph) but it was hitting about 4000RPM at 35mph (not WOT, but I did not want to push it any higher). I would really like to get either a 3 or 4 blade prop (AL or SST) that would allow for improved hole shot and lower plane speed (over the original 14.25 x 23P) without sacrificing too much top end speed.

Any info or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Need a new prop

I went from an AL 14.25 X 21P 3 blade to a 14.25 X 19P 4 Blade SS. Prop guy recommended I drop in pitch. I get up on plane easier, nicer hole shot, hold plane at a lower speed.
Possible loss of a couple mph top speed, I haven't tried that out yet cause I don't really care about that too much.
He was right in his recommendation. The place I got this prop has a program where you can try a prop and exchange it for a different pitch if you don't like the first one.
It's only for Stainless props, & they have to be returned in new condition within a certain timeframe.
Boat is the 4.3L MPI Merc on an 18' bowrider.

Thanks. How did going to a 4-blade prop with the drop in pitch effect your WOT RPMs?

The 23 would not be the selection for water sports.
You could have run the motor up to wot w the 4 bld long enough to get an idea of the rpm.Surely an over rev but then you could tell better what less pitch might do for you.Generally a 4 blade will cost you some top end and rpm 2-3 mph. This could vary widely. a 22 4 blade would improve your hole shot and ability to stay on plane.
and hopefully not lose too much rpm and speed. You appear to be 200 over on the SX now.
They also can improve handling on plane and at the dock.
