Think this tire needs replacing? I'm just not sure....

Was putting new tires on the trailer today and saw this. I knew the tire had rub damage, but not to this extent!!!

A closer look shows that the cords were exposed. Pretty close to a blow out.

This damage was caused by a bolt that holds the fender on. Here I have "reversed" the bolt so it sticks out of the fender, not in. The fender was bent a little, and that little bit is all it took to make this mess. That is a 1/2" nut on the bolt. Also bent the fender back into proper position.

The prior owner of my Bayliner must have backed the trailer into something solid and bent the steel fender. The fender was bent enough that when large bumps were hit, that bolt just scraped the tread right off the tire. I remember hitting a rough section of pavement on the Cross Bronx Expressway in NYC (shocking, I know :D) a couple of weeks ago. It hit so hard, I could hear it, sounded like a loud zipper, and I was only going about 40 mph.

So a week or so ago, I ordered new tires. And checked both tires to make sure there is enough clearance between the tire and fender, especially the bolts. I'm going to get new galvanized carriage bolts for both fenders, and mount them so the smooth head is on the inside of the fender.

I think I got lucky that the tire didn't blow.

BTW, thats a 5.30 x 12 LRC. 80 PSI. Wow!

Yea the tire was really close to blowing lucky you ordered tires before it did.
I switched two of my bolts that was like that with a carriage bolts to make sure that never happened to me.

I checked the manufacture date of the old tires, it was 2001! Those tires needed replacing regardless of the rub damage. What is surprising is there are no dry rot cracks or other signs that the tires are 9 years old.

Gonna have to pay closer attention to the trailer tires from now on.

Reading comprehension fail.

LOL! You are too much!

BTW, I have to give credit to the old Escort trailer manufacturer for making one heck of a tough trailer. To get the metal fender bent back into position, I started by sliding a pipe between the tire and fender and prying up. Fender didn't budge. Took the tire off, and using a 10lb sledge and a block of wood (to protect the galvanize finish) I pounded the heck out of it. It didn't budge. Then I got the idea to put a jack stand under the fender with a block of wood on top, and let the floor jack down slow...... The weight of the boat was enough to bend the fender back into shape. A little message from the sledge and its you can't tell it was ever bent.

Now I know why people like to buy old Bayliner boat trailers..... Tough trailer.

Lucky, Yes. I wouldn't push it though, get a new tire.
Since you have repaired the problem that caused this I hope you get another 9 years out of your next set of tires.

I wonder what the speed and wear rating of JB Weld is :D?

I am surprised you just noticed this, or do you not use that trailer much? Either way , pretty much a moot point, as it is all better now and you can consider yourself a lucky man that did not come apart.:)

Look again. That tire was getting ready to pitch a cap any time.

I don't comprehend why there would be any question regarding replacement of a tire that had the carcass fabric showing through the big crack in the center of the tread?

I am pretty sure he was being sarcastic. That can be difficult to convey in writing though.

Unless I am totally mistaken the title and original post contained what is called sarcasm.

He already said he ordered new tires in the first post.

I don't comprehend why people don't read even the entire first post...

I bought the boat/trailer in 2005, and at that time I didn't think to check how the tires were. My bad.

I noticed it end of last season, but it wasn't bad, so I let it go until this season. Then when I went to take them off, they had got much worse. I only took one trip with it this year, so I wasn't on top of things.

Look again. That tire was getting ready to pitch a cap any time.

What does "pitch a cap" mean?

Ahh, yes, the Cross Bronx Exp. My favorite road to hate. They fill in a hole with a bump, and let the trucks pound them down! What a disaster.

And to all, yes that was sarcasm in the initial post. I'll have to be more careful about how I post in the future.

Have you ever seen just the tread of a tire laying on the road?. That part of the tire is called the cap. In the old days we had recapped tires, where just that part was replaced.

I'd run it locally where I could keep my eye on it. I'd prefer to run it till it dies. It took ally of chemicals and energy to create that tire. Its the green thing to do ;)
