for engines made in the last 3 or 4 years what type fuel system do these engine have?
etec?
Vornado
optimax
Std Yamaha.
I know what FI is (injected into the intake manifold)
and HPDI - is injected into the cylinder itself, but what type system is on these other engines?

The Verados (note spelling) and Yam 4-Strokes are MPI, the Opti's are DI...

Im not sure about all of them..but heres what I know:
Verados (Supercharged) and Regular Yamahas are Multi-Port. Optimax is Direct
HPDI is just High Pressure Direct Injection
E-tecs are also MP (I believe) but have a high tech computerized injector that manages the amount of fuel fed to the engine. (Supposedly more efficient)

seems the direct injected ones would need a strong pump?
And is direct injection a 2 stroke thing?

Direct injection motors inject fuel under very high pressures, atomizing at low RPMs, becoming homogeneous at higher RPMs. Injectors can see pressures as high as 750 PSI...

DI is not just a two-stroke thing. It is being used on many automobiles today. It is essentially the third generation of fuel injection. Gen 1 = throttle body, Gen 2 = port. Gen III = Direct. Diesels have been doing it for years. Cars are more recent. Four stroke outboards tend to be port injected.

what prevents water in the ethanol from rusting the high pressure pump parts?

In the late 70 s oldsmobile had a diesel engine with an injector pump and many many of the pumps failed due to rust from the water in the diesel fuel causing rust
