I have a 1990 200hp Evinrude on my boat. Took off from the ramp and a low speed and the boat ran normal. Tried to go faster and the boat took for ever to plane off. Kind of like it had to build up. After a few minutes it planed off but wouldnt run as fast as normal. Then i hard it let go and the motor reved up and the boat sate back down in the water. Very much like when a cars transmission goes out. Could this be a lowe grear oil problem? Where do i start trouble shooting? It seems to go into gear.

could be a couple things, the drivesshaft could have broke, crankshaft splines stripped, and they could be caused by the loweruni seizing, start by,removing the oil drain lug onthe lowerunit. If you have lots of metal and bad or no oil,you know the lower unit is bad. Then pull the lowerunit and check the driveshaft for being broke in 2 ,also look at splines on top for rusty stripped metal, did you happen to notice if ,when the engine was running(did it keep running?)did it still pump water,if it did your crankshaft is fine and the problenm could be driveshaft and Or the gearcase

Thank you for replying,
Yes the water pump was still moving water. Doesnt sound like this is going to be as simple as low in grear oil. If a shafe broke wouldnt it not move at all? Meaning, i was able to get it to plane off before it gave out. So a broken shaft would be all at once correct? What type of clutch system is used on a motor like this?

Thanks for your help.
