I have recently got ahold of a 3-hp Ted Williams M/N 217-58521-0 S/N 5D-153135. Hopefully someone can help me by answering a few questions:
* Can you tell me what model year this is?
* Also I have seen several posts on the correct fuel/oil mixture but all seem to be different and even some recommending regular 2-cycle oil instead of marine oil. Do you know what the correct fuel mixture is and the correct oil to use?
* Sears still stocks a prop for this motor but it is over $50. Are there any other suppliers that would have one at a more reasonable price?

Well, if you have the model number right, it's not a 3hp, but is a 5 hp, made in 1970.

Could you check the number again, please?

As for the prop, you could check www.certifiedpartscorp.com, then call them and see what they want for a prop. They can also supply you with a manual that will give you the correct fuel:eek:il ratio. I'm not certain on that model, and the specs changed over the years. Those props show up on ebay from time to time, too. Props are expensive if they're new, though.

Go to <http://home.earthlink.net/~brixent/Model21758510-58882.htm> where you will find that the 5 horse Model # 217-58521 uses a 24/1 fuel/oil ratio. You can get parts at the same site. Nice guy to do business with in my experience too.

TCW was the recommended oil. Modern TCW-3 is just an improved version of same. But frankly I rather doubt the motor cares one way or the other whether you use TCW or oil for air-cooled applications. Remember---the same Tecumseh motors were used in lawn & garden equipment where air-cooled oil was the suggested lubricant. In theory at any rate the oil for air-cooled applications SHOULD have superior lubricity and heat tolerance properties than an oil for water cooled motors which operate in a much more stable cooling environment.
Your mileage may vary, etc.

I double checked the model # and it is correct. The decal on the rope starter housing indictates it is a 3-hp. Not sure what I have now? I am assuming that I should rely on the model # when getting parts. In case this clears anything up, the prop is a 2 blade. Should a 5-hp have a 3 blade? Just shooting in the dark...

Its a 2 bladed 3hp,
sometimes the Eska files are just not right, I would go with the 24:1 ratio TCW-3 oil until we discover the year,

(Edit)that outboard has no water pump either, just water forced up the water tube, so it might even be a 16:1 ratio,

could you give us the number from the tag on the carb,
should read like 6XX-XX might help to home in on the year.
