How's my Scarab (502 Merc Magnum MPI) look and sound? Opinions wanted!

I am wayyyy behind after moving this spring.

502 was winterized and fresh lube and oil were added in November.

First start of 2010!

On the muffs, 80 degrees outside. Engine warmed for 5 mins by this point in vid. Running on full tank of reg unleaded with Stabil from fall. This is first start of 2010. Exhaust has two huge waterlift mufflers that build up with water before dumping out transom. She fired on crank number two (3 seconds into crank). Crank number one was about 5-7 seconds. Old plugs were in her.

Not sure what you're looking for, sounds like a boat idling on muffs.

Enjoy!

Re: How's my Scarab (502 Merc Magnum MPI) look and sound? Opinions wanted!

I posted a video so I could see if anyone would point out water flow issues, or maybe could comment on sound or the amount of steam, etc. If all is good, then that is great.

I have been boating all my life, and know outboards very well. This is my first I/O.

I respect -- deeply -- the knowledge here at iboats. I've read numerous posts where owners describe sounds, sights and smells that they don't understand and then there is a back 'n' forth series of questions and guessing that ends in speculation. I figured that while I have a good understanding of how she should look and sound on the muffs, the best way to get opinions would be to post a video that was less than 24 hrs old and give all the background.

I am surrounded by outboard owners in my neck of the woods. The avg horsepower is about 40. I am towing the Scarab to the Jersey Shore for rack storage, and when I get there it will be my first chance to actually talk to someone who works on I/0 boats (with a workload that is 3-4 weeks deep and behind). When I get there, it'll be too late. She needs to be nice an ready now.

So, thanks for the input so far and for anymore that might come. :)

From what I see it looks about right mind you I just got back into the boat saga after a few years off, hard to tell on muffs though other problems may arise when in the water running from her own pump but it does look fine.

I wish I could have gotten the sound to work I would have liked to hear how it sounds with the water lifts on it VS mine. I have straight thru hulls mind you there are end baffles in my tips but I have a feeling the twins sound in mine is going to get old I don't think I can fit water lifts but I would have liked to hear it.

the steam is normal, I have the same placement of exhaust but i do not have water lifts. But, that is just cold water touching hot engine parts and is normal

Roll over the video with the cursor and a speaker icon should pop up on the right, which you can click to crank up. I think the default audio setting in the player is very low.

When the boat gets under power (load and RPM), the waterlift mufflers keep the pulses flatter, so that it sounds nice, but not god awful. Far from quiet, and far from obnoxious. The water builds up in the cans at low rpm, but when you lay into it, it blows a lot out and you get the tone, but enough water to keep it from being racket.

Nope still no go I may have to upgrade my player as it had to search for the codec just to play the vid. Nice though wish my old girl looked that good but I can not complain.

I am going to have to go looking for some inline mufflers for mine I think, wish I could get some water lifts in it by your description but there is no way I have the room between the SBC's.
