I hit something this weekend and have borken sommething in the lower unit on my Johnson 15hp. When you put it in gear it clacks and stalls the motor. Upon draining the lower unit I found metal fillings so a rebuild has been started. This will be the first lower unit I have rebuilt so thanks ahead for the help. So far I have pulled the lower and removed the water pump housing and the drive shaft. My question is when removing the bearing carrier should I pull on the carrier or the shaft. I have seen some pullers that thread into the gearcase and pull on the shaft and I have seen some that catch carrier and push against the shaft. Which is correct? Thanks

Sorry to hear about that. I would strongly suggest you get a service manual for your motor. The proper methods are there for all the procedures you may want to accomplish. In the mean time you might just find enough info. at this link to get it done. Best of luck. Rick.
