1961 40 horse lark ii bogging out after a mile or so...

Thought I'd post up before I start tearing my motor apart. I've ran this motor personally about 20 times in the last 2 months mainly in the salt. I've had an issue 3 times now with the motor falling on its face an then hesitating to gain power again. I'm spitting water fine an I'm not atarvingbit for fuel nor running it too rich or lean. Good connection in my fuel system with filter but my prop is an 11 pitch on an 18 foot glass on wood hull. I'd like to drop the impeller to make sure that's not my problem but have no idea how to drop the lower unit. Not an outboard guy... Yet haha. Any help is appeeciated thanks

I'm going to PM you some insight into the water pump change, should work for your 61 as well.

First off does it have electric start/control box. If it does, rule out the ignition switch by disconnecting it from the motor, you will have to start it manually but you will rule out any switch issues grounding out a coil.

If this isn't the problem:

As for power dropping out it sounds like ignition, sounds like a cylinder is cutting out mid flight. Check compression for beginners, if all turns out well pull the flywheel and inspect coils for cracks, condition of points, etc etc etc. Check condition of wires and plugs. If the ignition has never been touched chances are it's due for an overhault
