Hey guys I have a 1989 Glastron and with the engine turned off if you put the control in the forward position and spin the prop it locks engaged in the reverse gear and if you place the control in the reverse position the prop locks engaged in the forward gear. What in the world could cause this?

Maybe rephrase that with clockwise (CW), and counter clockwise (CCW) looking at the drive from the back of the boat. Are you saying that you think it is doing the opposite of what it should do?

Its normal. You'd have to see how a clutch dog is set up to understand it.

BTW... its bad to shift with the engine off, the system is not designed to be shifted unless both F and R gears are spinning.

I concur with justjason. The thing you have to remember is which direction power is flowing. It's coming from the driveshaft to the prop shaft. You are inputting the power opposite that when you spin the prop, thus the prop behaves opposite what it would normally.

Re: Alpha one shifting problem!!!

Ok let me explain a little better if you are standing behind the boat looking at the outdrive when in forward position the prop spins freely clockwise but locks counterclockwise (can not spin it CCW). And when you shift it to Reverse the prop spins freely CCW and locks CW. Its shifting backwards it seems. By the way I can't run the engine and shift it into gear because it shuts off as soon as it tries to go in gear. I think I understand what JustJason is saying it struck me odd that the prop was not locking in the direction it was selected to go ( Foward selection the prop lock CW and Reverse selection prop lock CCW) but I don't know if you guys say it's normal than I belive you. I guess I need to check my cut out switch on my selector panel of the exhaust riser huh? By the way thanks for the information guys it really helps and I am greatful for it.

It may seem backwards, but it's not, that is how it should work.

Nope the switch is working as it should. Your problem with it stopping the engine is probably a bad shift cable. When a cable gets hard to move, it causes the shift interrupt system to stay engaged too long and the engine dies.
It's a Very common problem.
