Hi.....

I've recently purchased a 1996 Crestliner Sportfish 1750, with a 1996 Johnson 115hp V4, model J115TLEDA.

The problem: I'm a new boat owner and am clueless about how this thing operates. Therefore, I've left a request on the Crestliner forum for an owner's manual for the boat, and want to leave a similar request here for an owners manual for the Johnson motor.

If you yave a manual for this motor or similar, please contact me and hopefully I can get a copy.

Thanks!

Don't buy a factory owners manual, at $45 for 40 pages its a waste of good money. I bought one by mistake. Theres next to nothing in it!

Get the factory service manual.
www.outboardbooks.com

don't buy seloc or clymer.
Don't bother with manual on CD either.

I agree with the other poster, there is lotsa good vids on youtube.
Especially the service videos.

Before you try starting it up do some service checks.
You need a water hose attachment called muffs, if you run the engine without feeding it water you will instantly damage it.
Draw some fuel and let it settle in a glass bottle, look for water seperation.
Make sure the battery terminals are TIGHT and don't use wing nuts.
Check the gear oil for water, if it looks milky its got water in it.
Change it and use new seals on the drain screws.
Theres more but I gotta go work.

The best advice i can give is to do some research and inform yourself on anything your a little fuzzy about. I use the part diagrams alot when im really sure what a part does or what its called. I have learned some invaluable stuff this way, and a good side effect of this is that i can then ask questions in a forum such as this and fill in the blanks. Its a little work but well worth it it the end. Good Luck

Boats are not like cars, trucks, TV sets, or video games when it comes to user manuals. You need to understand that boat manufacturers have no idea which manufacturers engine (Merc, Evinrude, Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki, Tohatsu. etc) will be installed on the boat. While manufacturers often "package" boat/motor/trailer combinations, they then provide manuals from the manufacturers of those products. You get a worthless user manual for the boat, you get a almost as useless owners manual for the engine and a totally useless manual for the trailer. So -- don't bother with any of them because even for the boat, you will get only very generic switch and gauge information. For the novice, the info is worthless. Find a seasoned boater (a neighbor or friend) and have them explain what stuff is. If he/she cannot answer your questions to your satisfaction, try us.

WARNING: Lesson #1 is to determine if your 1996 Johnson motor has the oil injection (note that I said OIL injection not FUEL injection) system intact. If there is an oil resevoir at the back of the boat make sure that is always kept at least half full of TWO-STROKE OUTBOARD oil that has the label TCW3 on the container. If the oil injection system has been disabled or removed as so many folks seem to feel is necessary -- then you need to mix oil with the fuel at a ratio of 50:1 (1 pint for each six gallons of gas). Failure to heed this advice can cost you an engine so before you head for lake, make sure you understand this and know what you are dealing with.
