Re: later modle evinrude points and timing set.

i have what i believe is a 78 modle evenrude and i was out on the river when i noticed a rattle. i shut motor down and took off the top. i noticed that the flywheel had come lose. i brought it home and looked at it more throughly and the keeper pin had sheered off. so i put a new pin in and i believe the timing is off. just wondering how to set the timing. after i fixed it i took it out and ran good in reverse and idled fine with full power. then switched to forward gear and it pulled but didnt have hardy and power. just seemed like it was in idle or slow mode. so i re set the points to .20 and still didnt help is there a nother way to time this motor? if so its a 6hp evinrude. im going on a big catfish contest here where i live on sat morning please help i can't get my money back because i pre registered at 100.00 and its going for riley for kids hostpital.
Sounds like it is running on one cylinder. You have checked the spark plugs? And you have spark on both cylinders? When it ran with that loose flywheel did it batter the keyways? If it did, you may not have a motor left to fix. The flywheel must not slop back and forth on the key because that affects the timing of the magnets with the points.
It may be too late now, but when installing a flywheel, the tapers must be clean and dry and you must use a torque wrench to tighten the nut to the correct spec. Failure to do so will cause just what you are witnessing and will destroy the crankshaft and flywheel.
