Just bought a nicely restored classic boat..Powered by a nice two stroke 1972 50 hp evinrude with the Elec. Shift..

Have took it out a few times in the local river, my question is:

How much water should be coming out the two vertical "exhaust" slits?

At low speed its a pretty good dribble, out both slits.. I'm used to seeing a merc stream you know.. And at high speed, say 40.. its nadda , meaning no water coming out... Motor runs great besides that.. Just don't want to burn her up.. I know the impellar/pump system was replaced a few years back when the motor was rebuilt.. i want to know whats considered normal for this model.. Thanks in advance for any help..

I have exactly the same motor. Tassadaddy has helped me a lot with it on here. Mine dribbles at idle and low speed and then at higher speed more comes out.
Just a couple of things... Do you know about the electric shift seloniods in the lower unit. If one goes then the motor will go in forwards only. Its a fail safe so if theres a problem you can get back to the ramp. These seloniods are hard to get hold of ( not wishing to scare you ) and they can be expensive too.. If you get the chance to get a spares motor do so.... you will save a fortune. Other parts such as coils starters etc are easy to get hold of from the local johnson dealers.
If you are in florida a few have come up on ocala4sale in the past month or so. I know two are on at the moment.
