New to me 2002 NSF9.9B 4 stroke, manual start. No service manual yet... Maiden voyage no problems, cruised around for about an hour. About a week later took my two boys out for a ride, going along for about 20 min WOT, a quick sputter then dead. Wouldn't restart, rowed it back in. Finally have a chance to look at it. First thing I notice, no red LED at all. Check for spark, none. I don't think that the coil pack has any juice, so now I'm wondering CD Unit, regulator, magneto?? anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,
andy

If there's no LED when cranking, there's probably no spark either. Time to check the ECU (CDI) per the service manual.

thanks for the reply, as I still don't have the service manual... What does it say about the CDI and how to check??

Thanks,
Andy

I believe you have an NSF9.8 (not 9.9) right?

The wiring tests are detailed on pages 75, 76, and 77 of the service manual. The charts are a wee bit complex to detail in a posting. But, here are some preliminary ohm meter readings (in ohms) you should find:

Exciter coil, Blue - Black/Red, 295, +/- 20%
Pulser coil, Red - Black (ground), 185, +/- 20%
Alternator coil, White - Yellow, 0.72, +/- 20%

Ign coil primary, Black - Orange, 0.30, +/- 15%
Ign coil secondary, (Plug wire core - Black (ground), 8.500, +/- 20%

nope I mean nsf9.9b , but I stated the wrong year, it's 2001 not a 2002.

Thanks for the numbers, i'll check them to see if they are anywhere close to what I have.

The 9.9 is like the 15, and is completely different from the 9.8, though the technology is similar. Check the service manual for the CDI troubleshooting information.
