I have a 1969 fastwin 18hp that would start and idle fine when I bought it a couple months ago. One night I forgot to vent the gas tank and sucked the bulb dry motoring to the boat ramp. Since then the only way I can get the motor to start is to put the motor in gear and crack the throttle open. With the throttle open it starts first pull every time. WHat does this mean for me and my motor? Thanks.

Carb (slow running circuit) in need of a clean most likely. Or will it idle normally once started?

You might have sucked some dirt in when it sucked the bulb flat... When it does start does it run at WOT ok? Maybe clean the screen in the pump...

have you tried adjusting the low speed needle? I assume so, so it's probably the carb. Cleaning em and putting a new kit in em always helps and the kits are cheap...

Yeah the screen is good and clean. Runs great wide open but sometimes not so smooth on the way up. It seems strange that it starts first pull with the throttle cracked open when it used to idle fine in neutral. It will throttle down and idle but I have to leave it in gear because if I throttle down enough to move the shift lever it will die. thanks for the replies, I'll try cleaning the carb.
