shifting problem

I just bought a 99 Four Winns 170 Horizon with a 135 Volvo 3.0 GS/SX. We've taken it out about four times and it runs great except that it is difficult to shift at times. It seems only to be stiff from neutral through the idle position. Once it shifts into gear, it throttles fine. Likewise, it is often stiff bringing it back out of gear into neutral. There are times when it seems to shift fine and is not stiff. I am going to order a manual but wondered if someone could give me a diagnosis. I am brand new to the boating world so please forgive my ignorance. Thanks for the help.

Re: shifting problem

Welcome Aboard..
There are lots of great and even some not so great minds here (like mine!)

I would be thinking you need your shift cable adjusted or plain out replaced.
Others (the great minds) will be along to offer far better advise than I can give.

Re: shifting problem

I am sure it has been explained many times but can you give me a basic idea on how to examine the shift cable. Thanks for the reply.
