Hi fellow Johnsons, I have a '96 20 hp that runs on one cylinder at low speed and does fine on mid to higher speeds. I was told by an engine repair grad that it was most likely the stator. Any ideas? I'm a doit yourselfer being a teacher and not having the money to take it to a shop.

Re: 20 hp low speed trouble

That sounds plausible as long as someone else is buying the parts.;)

Can you swap the coils around? see if the problem follows the coil.
Just for giggles, first try swapping the sparkplugs, it CAN happen that a plug has internal resistance and can't fire til the ignition gives it a good kick.

Your best money at this point is buy a factory service manual, then follow the ignition tests in the book before ordering parts blindly.
A bit pricey at $78 but still gonna save you a load of money first time you use it. Goodbye Mr mechanic.

Make sure you get the SERVICE manual, not owners manual.
