I have a 1971 evinrude 3 cyl. carburated that has ran fine at home on the hose even at WOT. Yesterday I took it to Big Bear Lake, elev. 6000+ and tried to put it in the water. When I lowered the engine into the water and turned it on, it ran terribly at idle and died as soon as i gave it gas. Its recently had a change of plugs and points, new oil in the gear case. Fuel mix is 50:1. Any thoughts as to why it died on the water? Could have elevation been the sole problem?
