Hello all. I am new to the boat restoration hobby, I found great info on removing the interior panels and hardware in these forum post. However I removed a cover on the shift handle removed the screw and the handle and plastic plate where loose. but as for the wires do I just cut them behind the fiberglass and splice later. Also there are a tilt and trim switch on the handle and also behind the handle on the plate. do I need both switches. Thanks for your responses. Bruce

Bruce - we can't see your boat! What make/model of engine and drive?

I have a 1983 glassport with merc model 470 The cap on the shift handle has HI-LEX written on it. sorry about the lack of info. Thanks again.

The second switch behind the panel may be a neutral safety switch. IE the boat won't start when in gear.
