Default 1970 Evinrude Selectric 60hp

I am having trouble with my outboard. It only runs about 5mph top speed. The forward and reverse works fine.

I put new Premium Blend Type C gear oil in the lower end. It has a new prop.

What could be causing this problem?

Thank you for your help.

1. check spark - May only be running on 1 cylinder

2. Check compression.

3. Check for a spun hub.

Your motor is a hydro-electric shift model, not a Selectric shift model. While the distinction may seem to be minor, because they are both shifted via an electrical control, it isn't. The Selectric system works differently and attempting to use the remote conrol from one on your motor, could have some very undesireable results.

You probably have only one of the three cylinders on the motor developing power. Whether the problem is fuel related or ignition related, is unknown at this point.

The first thing that I would do is to run the motor with an inductuve timing light on each of the spark plug wires, one at a time. if you are not getting ignition impulse to two of the cylinders, this test will tell you of that very quickly.

If you are getting ignition to all three, next on the list is to test the individual ignition circuits with a spark gap tool. You can get one at the local auto parts store for a few bucks.

After having done these checks, if it appears that ignition is not the problem. You might have some junk in the high speed orifice of two of the carbs. If this is the case, its probably time for a carb rebuild.

One other thing that you might want to check, is fuel pump function. If the motor comes up to speed when you have someone squeeze the primer bulb, I would say that the fuel pump is the culprit.

Bear in mind that testing outboards on muffs and a hose won't tell you much about what is going on. In this situation, there is no resistence against acceleration, so the motor can seem to be running fine when it is not.

Thank you for the suggestions.

165 psi in all 3 cylinders

I have spark at all 3 plugs when tested

Do I have the wrong shift control box? It is a Selectric shift box, and from what I just read I have a hydroelectric shift outboard.

Do I check the individual ignition circuits under the flywheel? Are they like points?

Also, when underway, is the test to have someone squeeze the primer bulb to see if that helps the engine increase in speed? ...and then this would state that the fuel pump needs to be fixed?

I will also check the carbs.
