Having trouble getting shifter spring and bearing on a 79 evinrude 55 horse

I just replaced the ignition switch, I got the wires all hooked up, but when I went to put the controler back together I am having a hard time getting the spring and ball bearing compressed to put the shifter and cover back together. Is there a tool, or a trick to this?
