Salt applied liberally to french fries makes them really tasty.

Interesting!

I always found it fascinating that two separate elements, sodium and chlorine, which by themselves are deadly poison, combine to make plain old table salt, which not only makes food taste better but is necessary for survival (in moderation). Chemistry is cool.

I think no 5 is inaccurate..I think that the rice in the saltshaker is to absorb moisture not make it easier to get out of the shaker..

The rice comes out of the shaker easier because the rice absorbed the moisture that would cause it to stick together.

First time I took a trip to Florida, I thought "what's with the rice in all the salt shakers??"

A little salt on your coaster at the restaurant/bar will keep your cold beverage from sticking to it.
