Johnson 60 hp cough and rough idle

Hello,

I am new to the forum and to boating. I purchased a 93 tracker with a Johnson 60. I am having rough idling probems and coughing and dying, especially when I put it into gear. I have rebuilt all carbs, installed new plugs and replaced the power pack (this was for other issues that are now corrected). I have tried adjusting the low idle fuel mixture and can see a slight improvement, but still a problem. I have some mechanical background, but not on outboards. Can anyone give me some guidance and/or suggestions?

Have you checked for vacume leak?
Mabe your gas bulb?
I'm sure much more knowgeable folks will reply with more help ;)

I did a complete rebuild on the carbs. Did not dunk them, but used carb cleaner everywhere. They were actually in real good shape (no dirt or varnish). I will check for a vacuum leak, just in case.

I am having the same problems with a '95 60hp Johnson. The mechanic did all the above, including a new power pack.. said I had a short in it. It did not get better. I changed mechanics. The new guy found that my middle cylindar was scored and is not pulling enough vaccum at idle. When he did finally get it going it runs good at speed, but falters when you try to go to neutral or put it into gear...

His recommendation is a rebuilt block..about $2500.00.

How much should a rebuilt cost any way?
