2004 Volvo Penta 5.0 GXI fuel pump

My fuel pump started whining the last few trips out and on the most recent, the motor acted like it was starving above 3000 rpm. But not every time. It would bog down, backfire, surge, and sometimes die.

Is there any thing I can take apart and clean (already replaced the fuel filter) before I have to spend $700 on a new pump?

I was able to open the fuel pump and removed a few things that looked like paint pieces.

Took it to the Bay this weekend to troll for Halibut and it still whined, but not as loud.

Decided to make a 10 minute run to a different location at WOT and it appeared to be alot more responsive than I remember and ever since then the whine has been gone.

Must have purged all the air out of the system finally after being opened and cleaned.
