HP ? this boat/drivetrain

Looking at this boat (see attached) tomorrow. He says it's a 1979 21' Century but all the research iv'e done all i can find is that it is a model 230 which is like 22'. Has been a Fresh water boat mostly. Has a 350cu inch/eng, mercruiser drive. What drive was offered in 79? MC-1 or? When i look up 350 or 5.7 applications i find anywhere from 230hp up to255/260 hp. If anyone has or knows the 79 specs. Maybe the differences are 2or4 brrl carbs and newer have the Fuel injection. Any info would be helpful

How sure are you it's a 350 and not a 305? They look the same. The owner may not know for sure and just thinks it's a 350. Does it have a Merc SN tag above the starter?
If not how about some block casting numbers.

If it's an Alpha style drive, it would be the one drive.

Right you are Don. I'll have that info tomorrow. I guess i was wondering why the variation in HP for the 350s? even pre 1980 iv'e seen various hp ratings for the same engine. I can see the difference between a 2/4brrl carb. But i've seen like 4 different hp ratings. Will get tag#s tomorrow. thanks.

Horse Power ratings were sometimes crankshaft horsepower, sometimes propshaft HP and even the method used for measuring. Yes they varied by carb types. EFI didn't come out till the 90's so that wasn't one of the reasons in 79.
HP ratings really don't mean much. Today we have 5.7L MPI engines with 320hp at 5200 rpm, now who is going to run at 5200 rpm all day. HP rating is a number for the salesman, not the buyer.

I'd run at 5200 RPM's all day long if it wasn't my boat or my gas :)
