Merc 50 runs better when low on gas?

I have a 2004 Merc 50 2 stroke. I have been suspicious that it is not running right for awhile. (the local mechanics say its fine)

Anyway, I was cruising down the river the other day and ran out of gas. Right before I ran out, the motor got much louder and my MPH increased from 32 to 38. (on gps) What caused this? Can I duplicate this on a permanent basis?
Thanks.

Most 2 strokes do that, Cwark.

When running out of fuel they lean out to a dangerous level, but make more power unless they melt a piston, which is why they are not allowed to run that lean all the time.

That makes sense, thank you.
