Re: starcraft 14ft with a 15hp mercury

I had a 14' Grumman Champ with a 15hp Mariner 2 stroke that weighed in at about 800 lbs that would plain out just fine with two guys and a cooler full of ice. It topped out at about 23 mph. The hull was aluminum but it had a full wood interior laden with seats, carpet, livewell, three batteries, trolling motor, etc. It originally had a 9.9 and even that would plane the boat although only at about 17 to 18 mph. You should be fine with the 15hp. on a 400lb boat.

Yeah I agree with "reelfishin" you'll do fine. I have a 18hp on a 14' 1964 star craft alum. with 5/8 planking box's ect. I jam along.

p.s reelfishin.... was that just ice in your cooler?:D

Yup, you'll be much happier with the 15.
My first tinny was a 12' Starcraft with a 7.5 Merc on the back. I was just a skinny youngun', so that planed out well with just me and 3 gallons of fuel.

Re: starcraft 14ft with a 15hp mercury

I have a 1967 Klamath Aluminum weights 167 pounds with a 1975 15 HP Johnson 2 stroke. It will plane with me and the wife and light fishing gear and a ice chest. It will not plane with me and one of my buddies about 250 pounds and heavy fishing gear so it is right on the edge.

Of Course this motor was 15 hp at the power head not the prop shaft.
