Metal Detectors

Im looking at buying a metal detector. Right now Im looking at a Discovery 2200 and a Fisher F2 Metal Detector. Just asking to see if any one here has any advise?

i cant tell you about the 2200, but i have the lower price bounty hunter, which was $100 4 years ago when i bought it, and i am really happy with how it performs. i have hunted with a man using a $1400 dollar rig and found as much or more than he did.

School playgrounds, especially under jungle jims and places kids hang upside down are money pits!!!!!!!!!

Well, I went with the Discovery 2200. should be here next week. I we dont end up with snow. Ill let you know how I do.

when i first bought mine i was like a kid with a new toy, it was winter time and i was in my yard with a flashlight digging holes everywhere. LOL but i did find some keys, a few coins, the oldest being a 1926 mercury dime, and a ladies ring. i live a couple of mles from where they had a civil war haystation, and a small battle occured there, so i hunt it quite a bit.i pick up lots of different was relics, and i also found a nice 1856 seated quarter.

I have the Discovery 2200, that I bought from Radio Shack 4 years back if not longer. You can discriminate between different metals etc etc. It is a decent metal detector. The fact that it shows what size coin or metal it detects and it's 90% accurate if not better (just from my observation), I believe it's pretty neat. It'll even tell ya if it's a soda pop top. It takes some getting use to pin pointing coins or whatever, just read the manual or you might even be able to study a website for techniques. I use a few gardening tools to sift through and dig with, I have also used an old french fry basket out of a deep fat fryer as a sifter.

From what I read the brand "White" Metal dectors is one of the best brands. It's able to find change which is deeper and all. I'll probably just stick with my Discovery, I haven't been using it much lately anyway.

I've found change just around the area where we park our vehicles. Been to the playgrounds of the local school, found some change. I haven't found a bunch but I've found some. Haven't found any gold yet . I have taken the metal detector up to my uncles spot on the lake when the water was dows to see what I could find but I didn't find much of anything. One of my cousin's lost a ring up there a good while back, don't know if they every found it. Then when I was up there another cousin was there with her family (swimming), her husband made me believe "there was a necklace that one of them lost when the water was up they forgot to take it off as the dove in". Turns out it was just a joke.

Some things to remember before you get to carried away with where to go..... Get permission first before you go on to anybodies property, cover up your holes, and don't leave a mess. Alot of it is common sense. If you wanna be able to go back to that land again cover your holes, don't through any trash on the land.

When I first saw this thread, I thought this would make a great Xmas gift for my grandson...until I thought of all the wholes that would be in the yard! Details.
Anywho, he's only 9 y.o. Do the $50 models work good enough to keep a kid occupied?

As long as it has a speaker on it so when it detects metal is sounds off. Maybe he would be alright with reading the meter style. Maybe a 9 year old would have enough interest. If he knows what money is (understands the concept) and finds out that he can find change with this device then he might just stick with it. Get him one, tell him there is treasure out there to be found . Better yet show him the movie National treasure or one them treasure hunting movies then let him go at it.

Well, been out twice. It just too cold here sometimes. Well, so far I have found $1.01. 50 cents of that my wife found. This seems like alot of fun,

Glad you enjoy it. One thing that I've been thinking about is the fact that the land I live on was the land my father grew up on, over 100 acres which is now devided up between aunts, uncles, me and my cousins. There is no telling what is in the ground here. This was once a big farm and also was a big playground for my father and his brothers and sisters. Obviously indians use to inhabit this land as well, there has been arrowheads found.
