My asus mother board has 3 memory slots. The manual calls for pc2700 333 ddr memory, up to 3gb's. Currently I am running a single 512mb stick of pc2700 333.

Can I add two 1 gb of pc3200 400 sticks and if so should I put the higher memory in the first slots starting from the left. (3 vertical slots) A vendor states that the 3200 is backward compatible to 2700 and 2100.

Re: Another memory question(s)

You can mix memory but it will run at the speed of the slowest memory you have. I would put the new memory in the first two slots just out of habit. If your first two slots are color coded, tha means the motherboard probably supports dual channel memory (consult your manual). In that case you would definitely want your new memory in the color coded slots. My ASUS A7N8X-E motherboard has this feature. Yours may also.

I think all my slots are the same color and according to an analysis on the Crucial.com site, my MB does not support dual channel memory (is that the ddr thing?) even thought the MB manual calls for pc2700 DDR memory.

Dual channel memory is *not* the same thing as DDR.

I personally would stick with 2700 just because it is what is already in the computer. (The CL is different between the 2700 you have and 3200. This *shouldn't* cause problems, but I'm a product of the old days of computing and tend to be cautious) Unless there was some other reason for going with the 3200 - like price, availability, or 'future use'.

Thanks TG. I think I will go buy the Thursday (or is it Wed) Oregonian and keep my eye out for a better price. And yes, my comp uses ddr.

I double checked the manual to be sure.

"The motherboard comes with three Double Data Rate (DDR) Dual Inline Memory Module (DIMM sockets. These sockets support up to 3GB system memory using 184-pin unbuffered non-ECC PC2700/2100/1600 DIMMs."

"You may install any DDR DIMMS with 64MB, 256MB, 512MB and 1GB densities into the three DIMM sockets" It then states that they are for DDR333 DIMMs.
