Hi I have a 40 horse selectric evinrude year 1968 and i want to convert it to a short shaft from long shaft and i need to know how long the water pipes need to be cut from long shaft to short?

shorten by 5" but you will be able to measure the extension between leg and gearcase to get the precise amount or compare the lengths of the old and new drive-shafts.

My 71 40hp johnson had a extention that came off by twisting and pulling with some vicegrips. The tube is 8" long so look up 8" and see if there is a seem. I can post a picture of it if that will help. The long shaft is 5" longer though.

With an electric shift model, you'll only need a shorter drive shaft and shorter water tubes. On manual shifts, you'll also need a shorter shift rod coupler.

The water tubes may or may not have extensions on them. If it was an extension kit, it will have the extesnions, otherwise no.
The tubes just pull out of the upper grommets, then cut off exactly 5 inches. Watch out for a small hole drilled in one tube. That has to be the "up" tube. Swap them and it won't pump water. Make sure the o-ring is on the top of the water pump housing or it won't run with the hood on.
