Hello, I own a 1986 175 hp Evinrude since 1997. I'm sure that the charging unit hasnt wochange rked .I had the voltage/regulator changed. Still not charing the battery .i test the stator and itis ok i read 12vac at the out of the stator . Idisconnect the rectifier/regulator and use an ohmmeter to measure the resistance between the two wires going from the rectifier to the stator. This should read just a few ohms. There should not be any connection (i.e. infinite ohms) between either of these wires and the engine earth.
still no charing the battery

Re: chargin problems

Welcome to iboats.

What are your voltage readings at the battery both off and at 1500 RPM? Connections clean and tight?

Disconnect the yellow lead and yellow /gray lead at the terminal block. Connect the red meter lead to either yellow lead and meter black lead to ground to check for shorts. An infinite reading on HI ohms scale indicates the windings are good. Connect the ohmmeter on LO ohms scale between the yellow and yellow/gray. What do you find?
