I was wondering if anyone knew what size spindle is on my escort trailer. blew a hub last night and bearings are destroyed and the other hub is in difficult place to get at, tight to a fence at my storage facility, to take apart and use those bearing to match new ones. the boat is an 89 bayliner capri... i believe it is either an 18.5' or 19.5' boat and im assuming the trailer came new with the boat and that it was common to have same boat trailer combination at dealers. any help would be greatly appreciated. oh yea and if you have a step by step on replacing bearings, races and hubs that would help to. i have done several trailers about 10 yrs ago(open landscape single axle 2500-3500lbs) but im alittle rusty and want to make sure i do it right.
thanks again:)

Re: HELP!!!! trailer spindle size

You won't know till you take it apart, it will depend a lot on what axle they used and the axle rating. I'd venture to guess its probably a 2750 or 3500 lb rated trailer, which would most likely have anything above a 1 1/16" inner and outer up to a 1 3/8" inner bearing and maybe a 1 1/16" or larger outer bearing.

I've seen many combinations, the problem with Escort trailers is that they followed no standard.

Take off the old hub, tap out the bearings and match up the cups and cones.
I'd also check the other side, if one side failed, the other isn't usually far behind.

If you are unable to get a part # off of the cups / cones and can't get to the other side, you could always measure the spindle with a caliper. It should be easy to look at the spindle and see if it is straignt or tapered.

With a boat that size being on a single axle trailer, I'm betting that it is a 3500 lb rated axle and your bearings are 1 3/8" inner and 1 1/16" outer. That is the 'standard' combo if you have a tapered spindle.

Just went through this myself: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=268749

If you have the tapered spindle, go to Napa and get BR17 (1 3/8") inners and BR4 (1 1/16") outers. Check out the link in the thread above to get all of the part numbers for straight or tapered spindles.

You need to pick up 2 seals too. A single lip seal (17144) came out of my hub, but I was going to install a double lip seal replacement (17146) until I noticed that the additional thickness on the double lip seal would have covered up the grease passage on my easy lube hub making them unusable. Try to get the same seal that you have in your hub if you can read the part number once you take the hub off.

Thanks guys! great site by the way! yea i guess i will have to pull boat away from fence and take other side off, which i planned on replacing anyways while i was at it, just wanted to get one wheel on so i could roll it out and then take other one off so it wasnt sitting with blocks on both sides.

If the spindle is straight all the way from the threaded end to the seal surface, chances are it has 1-1/16 inch inner and outer bearings. If there is a step up toward the inner end of the spindle seal surface, it will very likely have 1-1/16 inch outer bearing and 1-3/8 inch inner.
