Can anyone tell me, wether, if I remove the prop, drain the lube, and remove the bolts, can I remove that lower section with out further disassemly, and access the water pump housing (impeller)?

You will need to pull the shift rod bolt also, it is under the carbs and you will need to pull the starter to get to it.

Pull the hood and follow the shift linkage and you will see the knuckle and bolt.

Sort of a pain but the only way to do it.

The lower unit is self contained, no need to remove prop and drain gearcase.

But removing the prop makes it lighter and less unwieldy.

I just rebuilt my wp and sat the skeg on a wooden picnic table seat and leaned the unit against the table with the cav plate on top so it wouldn't slip off. Don't be lazy though it is a good time to check behind the prop for fishing line and inspect the seals. So it's a good idea to pull it off.
