I have a manual for my Johnson 110hp VRO tlcur and the theory of removing the lower unit is sound. It tells me to remove the starter and unbolt the linkage that extends down. Many people on this site said that it's no problem but I am haveing a very difficult time getting to that linkage, let alone getting apart. I can even get the starter of because one of the bolts runs into the fuel pump. Should I pull the carbs>? Is there a trick that I am missing?

Any help is appreciated.

Sure, drop the lower cowl and the shift rod pin is easy to get at.

Got it, there was a cotter pin holding everything together. Everybody and there manual were refering to a bolt that needs to be removed. Anyways i got to your post to late and removed the carbs. I instantly saw how easy it could have been.

Oh well, carbs are off and I am going to give them a bath anyways. Impeller looked great. Some rust on the drive shaft though and there was some water in the oil. Seals?
