Default Need opinions on condition of aluminum hull

Folks,

I am about to start on the rebuild of a 1990 Starcraft Mariner 160.
Pictures of the boat are in the Photos section of this website in the
album "1990 Mariner."

The hull cleaned up pretty well other than some corrosion in the
stern. I filled her with water and it didn't leak a drop although
that's not always as good a test as putting her in the water.

I have attached three pictures

Empty Hull - gives you a sense of the "naked" hull.

Corrosion on Seam - how concerned should I be with this
corrosion/pitting along the seam? The corrosion is in the area of the
last two ribs on each side. I plan to coat the entire bottom (inside)
with epoxy. Anything else you would recommend?

Corrosion on Stern - There is significant pitting across most of the
stern and a hole about the size of a quarter well above the water
line. I plan to add an aluminum plate 40" x 11" on the outside of the
stern to add stiffness, put marine tex in the hole (sandwiched between
the new panel and the transom boards) and to put epoxy on the inside
of the stern. Any other suggestions? I will be mounting a 1996 75 hp
Mercury two stroke.

My most basic question is whether or not this level of corrosion would
make the boat a bad bet for restoration.

As an incidental question, any ideas on WOT for that engine and boat?

Thanks in advance for all your help.

Doug McNair

looks like a good candidate, instead of epoxy, use Gluvit on the interior, it is the aluminum boats best friend. what i did on one of mine to make seaming the deck easier, i ran 1x4's across like the one you have, 16 inches apart, screwing them to the stringers, then fastening the deck to the 1x4's. you are on the right track.http://forums.iboats.com/forumdisplay.php?f=407
