new problem 1960 75 johnson slight backfire.

backfires slightly throttling up one bad one throttling down. I set the timing throttle down (lined up all marks) any sugestions?

Not really timed correctly.
Spark plug wires crossed up.
Cracked distributor cap.
Carbon tracks in distributor cap.
Points not gapped correctly.
Running too lean.
EDIT: I just noticed you are the same guy that was getting water in the cylinder. Add to the list of suggestions:
Major engine damage caused by the water in cylinder.

Found the problem..I pulled the intake and the reed valve plate/housing off found someone had siliconed the reed valve plate to the engine. All the small ports were plugged with silicone. Cleaned and resealed it. I took the boat to the lake today and it turns out to be quite the power house. And no I didn't have it timed correctly I didn't see that there are 3 timing marks on the stator. and the leak in #4 cyl was the head gasket. thanks for the advice it is greatly aprechiated.
