Default broken lower unit bolt 64 evinrude

get this. I pulled the lower unit on my 1964 28 hp evinrude to change the impeller. when I put the lower back up I got it in position and while holding the it in place I started all the bolts by hand and started snugging them with a ratchet
I got five of the six bolt snug and almost as soon as I started to put pressure on the sixth bolt it snapped about a 1/8 th inch down from the head! I couldn't believe it. all the bolts came out no problem and I barely had any pressure on it. I didn't get to work on it any longer tonight because it was getting dark, but I can't imagine that it will be to hard to get out. Like I said they all came out easy and I know its not cross threaded because I started It a long way by hand. I'll keep u all posted.

Got it out this morn. Are these suppose to be stainless bolts cause I don't think the ones that are in it now are?

went and got all new stainless bolts today after I broke a second bolt (came out easy though) bolted it back on, fired it up and she's pumping purty. put one of the old bolts to a magnet and it sure wasn't stainless.
