I have recently become a boater. I bought an older crestliner with a Mercury 402 40 hp outboard. I got the gas line replaced and the motor seemed to fire up.
But it was smoking a bit. I just thought that it was burning off old oil/dirt. But it got worse. I noticed that it wasn't shooting water out the motor at all, so i guess the water pump needs attention. How do I access this part and fix it?
I'm not familiar with that motor but you should get yourself a service manual before starting any repair. You may find an after market manual at the library.
In the mean time be sure the intake and telltele(if any) are clear.
bugs like to nest in there. If your running in a barrel fill it to the brim and get it right up against the bounting bracket.
It's a 2-stroke - oil mixes with the gas. It's SUPPOSED to smoke a bit. I hope the gas you hooked up to it was mixed at a 50:1 ratio with a TCW-3 rated oil.
Get yourself a manual. For the waterpump, one of the aftermarket manuals (available right here on iboats) should be sufficient.
It was smoking a ton! I would imagine that it's supposed to smoke a little, but there was extreme amounts.
I did mix the gas and 2 stoke oil 50:1, so that should be fine.
I noticed that there was no water squirting out the motor. Should there be? I would imagine that's how it's cooled?
