1994 Yamaha 40 hp 2 cycle engine lights

I recently purchased a 1984 Boston Whaler with a 1994 Yamaha 2 cycle 40 hp motor. I have run the boat three times. Each time I have noticed the engine has a little green light on the front just below the cover. I ran it this afternoon and noticed there was a red light on. The stream of water that comes from the water cooling system seemed ok. I am totally new to this so can you help me understand what this means? I live on salt water and ran fresh water through the engine after each use. Thanks. Frank
