I have a 1998 5.0 mercruiser with a two barrel carb. In my manual it is telling me to make the final carb adjustments with boat in the water. can it be done just on the muffs? If it must be done in the water its ok I can do that next time i take boat out but just dont understand as to why it would have to be done that way. Thanks

Re: carb adjustment

The muffs do not simulate the back pressure from the water on the exhaust. Adjust it on the muffs, and redo the next time on the water.

Re: carb adjustment

If they are talking about setting the floats, they probably want to have the boat in the water so it is level where it will be running.

Re: carb adjustment

Unless it has changed, float adjustment on the merc carbs I've seen was always set at a specific value based off a reference point on carb. Idle mixture and idle speed are typically doneon water.

Re: carb adjustment

That's good info because I just picked my 2 barrel carb up from getting a rebuild.
