putting it back together

I have a 15 hp Johnson that I had to replace the impeller. How do I get the motor / shift linkage back together? When there is enough room to get a screwdrive in the gap, the bottom shaft isn't in the coupler. When it is in the coupler, I can't get a screw driver in there.

What to do?

Re: putting it back together

Take some needle-nose pliers and lift the lower shift rod, then spread the bottom part of the coupler very slightly with a screwdriver. Push the shift lever to lower the upper shift rod and reinsert the screw.
You have to have the screw removed to start with or you cannot capture the beveled part of the shaft.

Putting it in forward gear helps a pile too.
