Shift shaft part?

Can someone tell me the proper alignment of this part on the shift shaft? It does not seem to be in my manual. What does it do?

Time to put the lower unit on.

72 Mercury 4cyl 50hp
This motor has short shaft to long shaft extension on it, not sure if that matters.

Thank you

Re: Shift shaft part?

After studying the manual more I believe this is the lower reverse lock cam, but it looks different than what is pictured in my manual, enough difference I can not tell how to align it.

This is a motor I picked up this spring that had a bad lower unit and I am replacing it with one off of Ebay.

I should have noted the placement of this part when I dropped the old unit!

Now that I know what it is, I was able to do some forum searches on the subject and think I found the answer.

Set it up so as unit is shifted into forward gear the cam works against the mechanism.
