i have a mid 70's mercury 50 hp, and unfortunatly the shift shaft has broken off just above where it meets the lower unit, so i have to replace the whole shaft that goes right up to the top of the motor. the part has been discontinued, and i am going to make a new one from SS. rod. i was wondering if somone could tell me what i need to take off in the top end?

and what is holding that shaft in place, is it a screw, or a pin, and how would i take it out?

Fish, You might try to get a used one. They should be pretty common. If you look on www.dougrussel.com you can see if the 4/6 cylinder inline motors (70-150HP) share the part. There are a ton of those around

As for your Q: The shift rod was pinned to the top lever and bottom coupling.
