advice on 2000 Johnson outboard

I acquired a very low hour 2000 50HP Johnson outboard with tilt and trim that has automatic oiler. I have been adviced to have the automatic oiler removed. Is this a good idea?

Been lots of threads here on the forums about just that subject. Long time ago when the original VRO pumps came out, there was no alarms with the pump to warn of no oil and the pumps, being new, got a lot of bad rap. Seems every thing that would happen to the outboard that was equipped with a VRO, the pump got blamed.

But the pumps have come a long way since their introduction back around 84'. Dependable alarms, better made pumps make them a worth while thing on the engine. The real thing to be sure of is, make sure the alarms work. I have two engines with the pumps and I check the alarms at least twice during the boating season. Real good insurance.

Some will say yeah, get rid of them.....but....when you come down to it, it's up to you. Best thing to do is do a search here on the forums and get as much insight on them as you can. Post any questions you may have. Lot of good folks here that'll help.

As OBJ said, they are quite reliable. However, they do require a little maintenance.

The maintenance is much easier and cheaper than replacing a powerhead because someone forgot to add oil.

If it were me, I'd keep it.
