Transom Wood - Soft?

I drilled into the transom to get some samples of wood....I found the wood is a red wood of some sort. In all places drilled the wood looks good and lacks any black or obvious rotting areas, however, the wood shavings are soft. The wood is very easily dented with a screwdriver...

Is this a sign of damaged wood??

Redwood is indeed a soft wood. As long as it is not wet or rotted, I see no issue.

I would be more concerned with looking for signs of transom flex. Look for stress cracks.

When I say red wood, I mean that it is red in color. I have no idea what tree it is from.

Yes, transom has fiberglass covering.

I can post a pic of the wood shavings, but cannot post. Can I send to someone to post??

It is surprising to me that I could not find rotting wood (at least in appearance), as this wood was wet for more than 10 years that I know of, perhaps longer.
