I've seen a few posts about using .040 instead of the OMC manual's spec of .030. Just curious why? What is the benefit or performance difference?

The wider gap generally helps the engine idle a little better without effecting top end Cajun. I use the wider gap on both my engines and it does help.

Better idle and initial low speed performance at .040.

Thanks Guys! Looks like the .040 will help with trolling.

Spark plug gap setting .030 or .040?

I have a 140 evinrude and I found the same information here on evinrude idle issues and spark plug gap. I had simular problems with my engine's idle and on occasion I do use my boat for trolling and engine has been running like a champ ever since. It does help with keeping excess carbon from building up.

Well, just throwing numbers out don't get it if you want an accurate answer. What engine are you talking about? What type of ignition?

You know you are supposed to supply us with details so that, if you want a knowledgeable answer, we have facts upon which to base this knowledgeable answer. Otherwise you get passed over or a smoke job. :|

Old ignitions with points used .03 to .035. Modern solid state use .040 up. 8)
