newb needs help 115hp chrysler

I need help with a chrysler 115hp motor with only 150 hours on it. The thing is i know zero about getting a boat ready for the water. I know it runs fine but have not ran it for more than 30 second though because could not get water to be sucked up in the inlets for the coolant I tried those little things that looked like headphones but the leaked more than anything. And I tried setting the lowerhalf in a cooler but sill nothing. Is there a trick to doing this? The boat sat for a while it came from an estate auction and the guy who owned it died. So Iwould appreciate any help. thx Todd

Replace the lower unit lube.
Replace the water pump impeller.
Replace the thermostat.
Dispose of ALL the old gas, clean out the gas tank if it is dirty.
A new fuel filter is also a good idea.
Get new gas and add 2.6 ounces of tcw-3 outboard oil to each gallon of gas.

Examine the spark plugs, replace if needed.
Replace the entire fuel line, including the bulb.

The entire lower unit needs to be submerged, past the water inlets.
I suspect the impeller is shot, and needs to be changed anyway.

Now none of this is gonna cost you too much if you can do it yourself.
I'm sure you can, IF you invest in a repair manual.

Best to get a Chrysler outboard manual by Clymer.

Where is the thermostat located? Also how do u get to the impeller? I dont want to order any parts that i dont have to. I really dont want to have to order a manual then wait a couple of weeks to get it then a couple of weeks to get the parts. I would like to do it all at once.

go to www.chryslercrew.net and buy a downloadable parts and service manual. The thermostat is near the upper spark plug. The lower unit will require the bolts removed from the motor leg and the pin removed from the shifter . There might be another screw that has to come out in the exhaust snout. When ordering the thermostat you will want to order a new gasket and grommet as well. With thermostat out and lower unit removed you can back flush by sticking a garden hose in where the tstat was. When you remove the impeller check the inside of the water pump and verify that it is smooth and not pitted and that the water tube seal is intact. A service manual is a must for doing this stuff. You can probably get by without the parts manual.
