New Boater - Merc 25 HP making ticking noise

I am new to boating, got a 95' 25 hp Merc with a boat when I bought a cottage. The motor starts and runs fine but when I kill the motor in gear at slow idle I hear a ticking sound until the prop stops. What could the noise be and is this any cause for concern?<br /><br />Thx for any advice.

Take it out of gear before you shut it down. The sound you hear is the lower end ratcheting when the prop is being turned by the water. This is normal and it won't happen if you're in neutral.<br /><br />Good luck!<br />Nikko
