help!!!!!!!!!! i have a 1995 merc 25 horse and am trying to remove the lower unit so i can put a new water pump in, it drops down 2 inches and wont go any futher. it seems the shift shaft is not letting it come any futher. does the shift shaft come apart at the lower unit or come apart up towards the motor? i put a pump in my older 40 horse 1991 motor with no problem. the manual says it should come apart just by pulling downwerd. is there something keeping the shift shaft from comming apart? is the drive shaft stuck? i hate to beat on the unit too much. need help asap........

Re: lower unit removel

Those engines use vertical movement of the shift shaft to change gear (as opposed to all other Mercs, which rotate it). There is a connection inside the engine cowl, under the carb, from memory. It's a clip with a pin on it. Lift the clip and pull it sideways. Good luck.

Chris.......
